Joshua Littig, DPM class of 2025, MS, delivered a presentation titled Increased Population of CD40+ Fibroblasts Is Associated with Impaired Wound Healing and Chronic Inflammation in Diabetic Foot Ulcers at the Western Medical Research Conference in Carmel, CA on Jan 19, 2023. This was also the title of his article published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine based on his summer research project. The presentation and article address the pathophysiology of diabetic foot ulcers and the role that a specific fibroblast phenotype, CD40+ fibroblasts, plays in the chronic inflammatory state that contributes to developing diabetic foot ulcers. Through researching the presence of these fibroblasts and chronic inflammation, Joshua aimed to evaluate the prospect of targeting the fibroblasts to end the cycle of inflammation to improve wound healing.
When asked to share a little about himself, Joshua said:
“I’m a southern California native who likes to take full advantage of our unique proximity to the ocean and mountains. On my off time, I’ll either be fishing in the open ocean or chasing them under the waves. In the colder months, I like to blast down the slopes at a dangerous speed. My appreciation for nature extends to my pursuit of scientific discovery. With my unerring thirst for knowledge, I will advance the field of podiatric medicine with ever advancing evidence-based medicine. In my clinical practice, I hope to stay on the cutting edge of medical science to ensure that my patients receive the best care possible.”
“The conference was a great introductory experience for me into the world of medical conferences. I received much constructive feedback and encouragement from my presentation. Overall, it was a fun time that will aid in my professional growth.”
