1. What are you working on now that excites you the most?
Myself. No matter what age we are, we are a work in progress. I am constantly striving to be the best version of myself that I can be. This includes my health, my fitness, and my character. Getting older is a state of mind. It’s not an excuse to slow down, it’s a reason to keep going.
2. What book has had the greatest impact on your life?
102 Minutes: The Untold Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers. The book captures the little-known stories of ordinary people who took extraordinary steps to save themselves and others. It is a tribute to the best of humanity and a reminder that we may all face situations in life that will require us to be brave and take action. My Active Shooter classes are taught with this idea in mind. You cannot always wait for someone to come and rescue you; it may be too late, so you need to have the knowledge and strength to rescue yourself.
3. What is your most prized possession?
My family is my most prized possession. In my life I’ve been honored to be a part of many families and those that I have cherished most besides my family at home are my Marine Corps family, my Pomona PD family and my Western U family. All of the families I’ve been a part of have shaped who I am, taught me valuable lessons and have enriched my life.
4. What is something that surprises people about you?
That I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 47 years and that I have an identical twin.
5. What piece of advice would you give to five year old you?
Be generous, with your time, with your love, with your life. I would like to believe that I’ve done a good job of embodying this sentiment throughout my life. I am very service oriented, and it gives me joy to do for others.
