Being a National Lacrosse League (NLL) official takes a heavy toll on one’s lower extremities as College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) first-year student, Carmen Massel, DPM ’27, knows firsthand. However, the hard work, physical strain and dedication paid off for Carmen with a rewarding career that saw her become the first woman in NLL history to be on the officiating crew for an NLL game this past December.
From a young age, Carmen Massel gravitated towards her native country of Canada’s national sport – lacrosse. At the young age of 12, after playing in her youth, she began officiating games. The toll of the job has resulted in chronic issues to her feet and ankles, with 11 related surgeries to date. A setback? Not for Carmen! She was inspired to pursue a career in podiatry at Western University of Health Sciences.
Carmen’s trailblazing story has been recently published on the NLL website. Click here to read the story.
