Transformative agreements, sometimes called Read & Publish agreements, are a type of subscription between academic libraries and publishers that aim to transition the scholarly publishing system towards open access. These agreements typically involve a shift from traditional subscription-based models to models that combine subscription access to journals with open access publishing for authors affiliated with participating institutions. The Pumerantz Library currently participates in two transformative agreements through our membership in the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC).

The first is a joint SCELC/UC Read & Publish agreement with the publisher Wiley. This covers open publication of an unlimited number of articles in both hybrid and fully Open Access (OA) journals. All corresponding author articles accepted in Wiley hybrid journals or submitted to Wiley fully OA journals since Jan 1, 2024 (excluding Hindawi) are eligible.

The second is the Springer Compact transformative agreement. It covers article publication charges for over 2,050 hybrid journals with Springer, society-owned academic journals on Nature.com, Adis, and Palgrave collections. It does not include reading or open publishing of Nature-branded or Scientific American content. See the Springer Nature SCELC Agreement Author Information Page for information on how to publish under this agreement.
