Earlier this year Brian Wasko, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at COMP-Northwest published a paper with two COMP- Northwest OMS students as co-first authors, Connor Shortt, DO, ‘25 and Elise Krippaehne, DO, ’25: A simple and accessible CRISPR genome editing laboratory exercise using yeast.
CRISPR is a cutting-edge technique for altering DNA that has revolutionized our ability to precisely edit the genome. The COMP-NW group developed a laboratory exercise that allows for the visualization of CRISPR genome editing by using yeast cells that change color when a gene is altered. The accessible and cost-effective experiments are allowing undergraduate students across the country an opportunity to perform CRISPR and to learn the fundamentals of genome editing.
