June 2023 Dr. Pinakin Davey published in Optometry Times Journal – “Reading the Greens: Golf, Vision, and Nutrition”

Recreational and competitive athletes continuously search for ways to elevate their performance. In golf, a defining element of top golfers is the ability to read the contours of the green and determine the best trajectory for a successful putt. This element of golf performance is essentially a visual task, but few golfers or optometrists consider vision skills as an important factor for success in the sport.

In an article in the June 2023 digital edition of Optometry Times entitled “Reading the greens: Golf, vision, and nutrition”, Pinakin G. Davey, OD, PhD, FAAO, FARVO (along with Graham B. Erickson, OD, FAAO, FCOVD of Pacific University) have shown that optometrists have several options which include nutritional therapies to help recreational and competitive golfers enhance their visual performance on the golf course. A healthy diet rich in lutein and zeaxanthin is long known to maintain visual function in several disease states like macular degeneration. These improvements may be applied to many other disease states like diabetic retinopathy and may also augment and enhance vision in healthy eyes.

December 2023 – Dr. Pinakin Davey to Travel to Rome, Italy to Present Research Findings – One of Dr. Davey’s “Babies”

Dr. Davey’s research area is focused on retinal and optic nerve physiology and research methods of improving vision in patients with glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Dr. Davey will be presenting his research involving the accurate measurement of macular pigment in Rome, Italy, at FLORetina ICOOR 2023, November 30 – December 3, 2023.

His work centered on assisting a group of engineers and scientists in miniaturizing measurement technology and improving its performance and reproducibility with software changes made for how MPOD is measured.

The scientific outcome was the production of a new handheld device with excellent repeatability and agreement with predicate devices. Due to Dr. Davey’s study and the data collected, the unit was launched commercially in April 2023, and is sold under the name Zx Pro by EyePromise.

The Zx Pro will provide doctors with a baseline of MPOD. Eyecare providers should measure MPOD regularly and the individuals that have lower MPOD should implement life-style changes with improved diet or take nutritional supplements with the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin to improve MPOD. This will lead to benefits to the eye and the body.

Dr. Davey remarks, “When I see doctors using these in practice and loving the technology that made their life easier and can see patients benefiting from it, I derive pleasure in calling the technology ‘one of my babies’!”
